We all have skeletons in our closets. I have one that my friends as a young man would have shunned me for if they knew, and deeply upset my children when they discovered it. My wife forgave me long ago, and kind woman that she is, accepts it

So here goes: I confess that I LOVE 1970s country music:

Forgive me, Oppo. But I love it so much. If my SoCal punk rock friends back in the day had known, that would have been it for me, so I used to listen to these records (kept separate from the rest of the collection) by myself in my room with headphones. I still have my 45s, and both of these are in there along with my Jerry Reed, Willie Nelson, and yes, Oppo, even John Denver (although he was a little pop for my taste), and many others. I even have the Urban Cowboy soundtrack somewhere. My dad, an old school Italian from Philly, used to get emotional when “Country Roads” came on, even though his background was blackboard jungle more than Rocky Mountain High.

I get to drive the GTI over the Pacheco Pass to Salinas this morning. If my afternoon meeting doesn’t come together, I am taking the long way back up 198 through the tw isties.

Here is my first big takeaway from this car. I have not driven a front wheel drive car in LONG time, and WHOA, the difference is big. Learning curve in play to get back my old Integra skills.

I hope you have a great Monday.

70's-90's Country is absolute gold. You might check out Midland and Chris Stapleton if you like that vibe.

I think this song is brilliant and I remember it being sung by my dad and his buddies on weekends. I also remember Saturday mornings coming downstairs at breakfast time, being handed a black trash bag and wandering around the house throwing away beer bottles and emptying ash trays. Those were different times.

I can accept this. As long as you don’t like modern country.

70s country was already getting a bit more rock and roll, but mostly stayed true to its roots. Modern country is either Pop music, shitty rock, or worse dude bros using hip hop slang to sing about trucks, beers and tits.

Didn’t need a front plate where my grandparents lived, so my Grandpa used to have “It’s Hard to be Humble When You’re the Best” on the front of his 2 door Crown Vic LTD.

This is my guilty pleasure:

The GTI does need a stiffer rear sway bar. That is one thing I consistently wish about mine; I came from driving an SVT Focus which is so much more lithe and lively than the GTI. I do want for some of that excitement at everyday speeds again.

Have you tried Texas Country? Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Jack Ingram. If you will try just one, check out Robert Earl Keen’s No. 2 Live Dinner album. Recorded live at Flores Country Store. I have listened to it thousands of times.

Also, have to plug a friend of mine, singer / songwriter Josh Grider. He has a few songs that are more pop, but definitely deep country roots.

Josh Grider, Smallest Town on Earth

(clearly I have no idea how to insert the video from youtube)

From 1986-1993 I had to listen to KYSS FM 95.1 on the school bus 45 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the evening . I FUCKING HATE COUNTRY MUSIC.

Phewwwww.....

Have you heard any Jamie Johnson? He’s a current country guy who never got signed to a major label. The dude is legit real country. He’s got a duet with George Jones in his catalog . I had never heard of him until August, when he opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Dude had something like a 12-piece band with him, backup singers, horns, it was amazing. The highlight of the evening, was when they played “East Bound and Down.” I think the top of my head blew off when they hit the first couple of notes.

Here’s a great ska cover (real ska, from Jamaica) of Country Roads.

My uncle told me stories of his buddy, Mike Ness, getting harassed at shows because his band was too country. Ended up being able to put together a pretty good career out of it.

Nownyou got me in a mood. Gonna have to listen to some Cash and Social D.

The late 60's/early 70's “outlaw” country guys were the closest thing to punks this country had at the time. It had all fizzled by the time we got to the rhinestone cowboy phase of the late 70's.

Here I was thinking you mustang’d or cosby’d someone. This might be worse* ...

I have music most of my friends don’t know I listen to. They wouldn’t care, they would just give me shit I don’t feel like dealing with. Music is... almost  too personal sometimes.

* Kidding. Those are both terrible things and I don’t wish them on anyone.

Now they sound tired but they don’t sound Haggard,
They’ve got money but they don’t have Cash.
They got Junior but they don’t have Hank.
I think, I think, I think, the rest is,
A long time gone

- Darrel Scott, A long time gone

I can’t say I grew up loving it or even hearing much of it, but I did spend a few years playing bluegrass somewhat seriously and that lead to some crossover exposure with the greats of early country music. The older stuff is definitely real music, and I must admit I’ve always wanted to learn to play the pedal steel. The new stuff is... well not something I’d listen to anyways
